๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ is based in Brighton, England.
A composer, record producer and mix engineer who is a founder member of three pioneering Goa Trance acts - ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐, ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ and ๐๐๐๐๐๐, and also creator of the legendary London electronic music studio ๐๐๐๐, where numerous ground breaking early Goa trance records were written and produced through the 1990s.
Growing up in the ๐ผ๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ in the 1970s he was drawn towards the punk and alternative music movement after listening to ๐ฝ๐โ๐ ๐๐๐๐, and after meeting like minded kids at senior school he found bass guitar was his instrument of choice.
With a group of school friends he formed a band called '๐จ๐๐๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐๐๐๐โ, and borrowing a ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ฆ and ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ 606 drum machine from school during the summer holidays, this was where ๐๐๐ข๐งโs passion for home recording and using electronic musical instruments started to grow.
Moving to ๐ฟ๐๐๐๐๐ with his mate ๐น๐๐๐๐ ๐ณ๐๐๐๐ - a dynamic, driven drummer - in the late summer of 1986, he initially went to study bass guitar part time at ๐บ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐กโ๐ ๐ถ๐๐๐๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๐๐.
Doing as many courses as he could - general musicianship, rhythm musicianship - basically as many as were on offer, but one course in particular stood out.
This was computer based writing and arranging, and he fell in love with the idea of software sequencers.
By 1988, after working part time selling sandwiches up in the city, he managed to save enough money to buy an ๐ด๐ก๐๐๐ 1040๐ ๐ก with ๐ถ-๐ฟ๐๐ ๐๐๐ก๐๐ก๐๐, and a very early sampler, an ๐๐๐๐โ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐. This was the birth of ๐๐๐๐.
๐๐๐ข๐ง continued studying at ๐บ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐กโ๐ for the next couple of years, being accepted on the very first Jazz and popular music degree in the country, he was also playing in various bands with ๐ ๐๐ around ๐๐๐ข๐กโ ๐ธ๐๐ ๐ก ๐ฟ๐๐๐๐๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ, playing and exploring electronic based music with the band ๐๐๐, who were his ex ๐ด๐๐๐๐ฆ ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐ schoolmates. They had also left the island the year after him, and were living in ๐๐๐ ๐ก ๐ฟ๐๐๐๐๐.
By this time the studio had grown, with more equipment and a sound system acquired from the ๐ผ๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐ he started putting on squat parties.
At first these always involved bands, but slowly and surely the music gravitated towards the alternative electronic/dance music scene.
By 1990/1991, part of the ๐๐๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐๐ค were squatting in ๐ฟ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐ฃ๐, and every time the squat got closed they would get the sound system out and party.
One old friend, in particular ๐ป๐ข๐๐๐ฆ - who had just a sampler, a ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ป101, and an ๐ด๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐8 hardware sequencer, finished one of these parties off with a hardcore improvised techno set that blew the roof off the place!
By the summer of โ92, the West London posse managed to squat an old army barracks/mental asylum under the ๐๐๐ ๐ก๐ค๐๐ฆ that his old mate ๐ท๐๐ข๐ ๐น๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ turned it into a community art project, called ๐จ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ณ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, (which is still going to this day in ๐ต๐๐๐ ๐ก๐๐).
The plan was to do a massive party there, because they finally had the space.
Word got around, and out of the blue one afternoon a shifty group of individuals all with shaved heads turned up in the courtyard asking about the space and whether they could do a party there.
They turned out to be the renegade sound system and free party pioneers ๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ซ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐.
The crew decided to share an event with them.
It was a massive success, ๐๐๐ข๐ง ran the system and the ๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ซ๐๐ฅ's were shown what was possible with an improvised live Techno set.
That was it, the two crews came together.
๐๐๐ข๐ง was given the role of rebuilding ๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ซ๐๐ฅโs sound system which had been impounded by the police after the legendary ๐ถ๐๐ ๐ก๐๐๐๐๐๐ก๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ก๐ฆ that had happened in the May of that year.
Ironically ๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ซ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ had just signed a record deal with ๐ต๐๐ ๐ฟ๐๐๐ (who oversaw ๐๐๐ข๐กโโs ๐ซ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ Label). They had just got the advance and straight away decided to head to ๐ท๐ข๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๐๐๐ to do a free party on top of a hill overlooking the city in a place called the ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ช๐๐๐ - again the party was a great success.
๐๐๐ข๐ง ran the sound system, and for the first time in ๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ซ๐๐ฅโs history the system didnโt cut out once throughout the whole night.
That was it, ๐๐๐ข๐ง dropped out of college and ran that sound system, doing live techno sets with ๐ป๐ข๐๐๐ฆ and his mate ๐ฝ who now went under the name ๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ค๐ง๐จ๐ฐ๐ง and ๐๐ฉ๐ข๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐ฌ. They did this for the rest of '92 until it was decided to leave the Sound System in Paris after doing a party that Christmas with the European branch of Spiral Tribe, who had left the country after Castlemorten.
So as 1993 rolled in and ๐๐๐ข๐ง was left at a loose end, out of nowhere he met a guy called ๐๐ก๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ก๐ก through a mutual friend.
This fortuitous meeting would end up changing ๐๐๐ข๐งโs life forever.
๐๐ก๐๐ฃ๐ had just come back from Goa, where he had met ๐๐๐ข๐กโ, owner of the newly formed ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ฆ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ .
๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐, owner of ๐๐ฟ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ and a lot of the people involved in that very early scene at the time said - โ๐บ๐ฐ๐ถ ๐ฉ๐ข๐ท๐ฆ ๐ข ๐ด๐ต๐ถ๐ฅ๐ช๐ฐ ๐๐ข๐ช๐ฏ, ๐ญ๐ช๐ด๐ต๐ฆ๐ฏ ๐ต๐ฐ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ด ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ด๐ช๐ค ๐ช๐ตโ๐ด ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ง๐ถ๐ต๐ถ๐ณ๐ฆโ.
๐๐ก๐๐ฃ๐โs idea was to bring a collection of musicians together to make a Goa trance album and release it with ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ on a new sub label of XL called ๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฐ๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐๐.
He introduced ๐๐๐ข๐ง to ๐ฝ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ฟ๐๐๐, ๐๐๐ข๐ ๐ฝ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐, ๐๐๐๐ก๐๐ ๐น๐๐๐๐๐๐๐, and the Brighton crew, ๐ท๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ , ๐๐ก๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ and ๐ฝ๐๐ก๐ ๐๐๐โ๐ข, and together over the next year they produced what would become ๐๐ข๐ ๐ข๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐๐ฅ๐๐ก๐๐ฆ๐ฒ, ๐ถ๐๐๐๐๐๐ก ๐ผ๐ ๐ท๐๐๐๐โs first release.
๐๐๐ฌ๐จ๐ง ๐๐๐ค๐ and ๐๐๐ข๐ง ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ became ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐, ๐๐๐ข๐ง and ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฅ ๐๐๐๐ค๐ฌ๐จ๐ง worked on various projects. ๐๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ง ๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ would come over and work there.
๐๐๐๐ became a hub of pioneering Goa Trance activity. Classic tracks such as '๐บ๐๐๐๐ ๐น๐๐๐' by ๐ด๐๐ ๐พ๐๐๐ ๐ต๐ ๐ต๐๐๐ were written there!
The live element was always a massive factor in ๐๐๐ข๐งโs approach to making music... In the spring of '94 ๐ฝ๐๐ ๐๐ arrived back at ๐๐๐๐ one afternoon after accidentally ending up at a meeting at ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ต๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ with ๐ป๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ party organizers. They were organizing a tour across America that summer and ๐ฝ๐๐ ๐๐ volunteered ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ to come and play live on the ๐ป๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ to the USA โ94 (which actually made the front cover of ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ง๐๐๐).
So in June of that year after putting a live set together and adding an extra member ๐๐๐ง ๐๐จ๐๐, they borrowed the money for flights from friends ๐ฝ๐๐๐๐ฆ and ๐ถ๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐ of KLF fame.
This was lent to them under the premise that if they did not get the money back to them in time, Jimmy was going to blow up ๐๐๐๐'s Synthesizers on the 21st June, Summer Solstice..!! Thank goodness with the help of ๐๐๐ข๐งโs then girlfriend Bev they managed to get it together before the ill fated day...
So with flights booked, and equipped with an ๐ด๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐8 sequencer, a ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ป 101, an ๐ด๐๐๐ ๐2800 sampler, a ๐๐๐๐โ๐ ๐น๐500 and a mixer, they headed off to New York on what would become a crazy three months. Fourteen people driving from the Big Apple to San Diego, ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ doing live Goa Trance - a first - playing various crazy parties along the way, such as highjacking the end of ๐พ๐๐ ๐พ๐๐ ๐๐ฆโs '๐๐ฌ๐๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ง' play which was ending itโs tour at the ๐ฝ๐ค๐ช๐ก๐๐๐ง ๐๐๐๐๐ฉ๐ง๐ on Independence Day.
The event was part of a tribute to ๐ด๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ (who did attend) organized by the ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐๐ ๐๐ก๐ฆ. ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ were set up at the front of house and after the play had finished it was tradition that the house band would knock a few tunes out and the audience would get up on the stage and dance.
๐ท๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐, one of the Zippies - got on the mic and announced that โ๐ช๐ต ๐ธ๐ข๐ด ๐ต๐ช๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ ๐ข ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ธ ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐จ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฏ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ, ๐ช๐ต'๐ด ๐ต๐ช๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ ๐๐ฏ๐ช๐ท๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฏ๐ฅโ. ๐๐๐ข๐ง faded out the house band and ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ dropped โ๐บ๐๐๐๐โ from Digital Alchemy and the place went crazy - the stage was rocking, they only managed to play three tracks before the security said enough was enough.. so the Zippies attempted to persuade ๐พ๐๐ ๐พ๐๐ ๐๐ฆ to come along for the rest of the tour, but he said his time was done, and it was the Zippies turn to carry the torch.
Next stop on the tour was the ๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ค๐ฌ ๐๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ง๐๐ฃ๐ up in the mountains in ๐๐๐๐๐๐ค๐๐ก๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ก๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐๐๐, it was so high up in the wilderness it was snowing when they got out of the van, in July..! ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐, using a generator, played the first electronic set ever at a Rainbow gathering.
As an aside, the whole of this tour had a virtual tour running in parallel on the ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐. Remember this is 1994, the first ever of its kind!
By September they reached San Diego and the tour came to an end so ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ headed back to ๐๐๐๐ to regroup.
Once back in London ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ continued to write music for the second ๐ถ๐๐๐๐๐๐ก ๐ผ๐ ๐ท๐๐๐๐ album and thanks to ๐๐๐ข๐กโ spent some more time at ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ฆ ๐๐ก๐ข๐๐๐๐ in ๐ต๐๐๐ฅ๐ก๐๐, where the track '๐จ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐' was written.
They also started doing gigs in England and through Europe playing shows as big as ๐๐๐ฉ๐ช๐ง๐ฃ ๐๐ค ๐๐๐ ๐๐ค๐ช๐ง๐๐ at ๐ต๐๐๐ฅ๐ก๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐๐๐ฆ for the '๐ถโ๐๐๐๐ ๐ฝ๐๐ข๐๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ๐๐ฆ' launch party.
It was around this time ๐๐ข๐ง๐จ ๐๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐๐ฌ and ๐๐ญ๐๐ฏ๐ ๐๐จ๐ง๐๐ง signed to ๐ต๐๐ข๐ ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ and asked ๐๐๐ข๐ง if he would join ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐.
The whole of the advance from the deal was spent on musical equipment, and ๐๐๐๐ became a cutting edge electronic studio.
The studio was built around 2 ๐ท๐๐๐๐ก๐๐ ๐๐๐๐โ๐ ๐1๐ mixers with total recall which could be flight-cased up with the rest of the studio and taken out to do gigs.
So then over the next two years, ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ embarked on writing what would become the album '๐ฐ๐ ๐ญ๐๐๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐จ ๐น๐๐ ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐'. It was also around this time ๐๐๐ข๐ง met ๐๐ข๐๐ค ๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ก and ๐๐๐๐๐๐ was formed.
There were now three bands working out of the studio, and with this studio and live set up ๐๐๐๐ could have done whole nights with three bands playing live, which was ๐๐๐ข๐งโs original idea but unfortunately something had to give as everybody was trying to get in the studio at the same time.
Sadly ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ split due to the pressure, so the idea of ๐๐๐๐ events never happened, but the split did lead to quite a number of ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ tracks never seeing the light of day, until now, when Iain was asked to do this radio mix for ๐๐ก๐ ๐ฟ๐ค๐๐จ-๐๐๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐๐๐ ๐จ.
Four of the tracks appear in this mix.
Over the next three years, ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ and ๐๐๐๐๐๐ released a number of tracks on classic labels - ๐ต๐๐ข๐ ๐ ๐๐๐, ๐ท๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ฆ, ๐ท๐๐ ๐ก๐๐๐๐, ๐โ๐๐๐ก๐๐ ๐, ๐พ๐๐ฆ๐๐ก๐ to name a few, touring all over the world, playing live sets to grateful audiences before ๐๐ข๐๐ค and ๐๐๐ข๐ง decided to take a break from ๐๐๐๐๐๐ , and ๐๐ข๐๐ค left to build his own studio in Brighton, leaving just ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ to finish off the album in ๐๐๐๐.
In late โ98 ๐๐๐๐๐๐ decided to regroup down at ๐๐ข๐๐คโs new studio in Brighton, where he had installed ๐ฝ๐ข๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐ก๐๐โs old DDA desk to embark on writing an album. Over the next year and a half, ๐๐๐ข๐ง commuted down from London to co-create the record '๐ณ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฎ๐', which was released on the newly formed Brighton label ๐ด๐ก๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ , in 2000.
By this time ๐๐ข๐ง๐จ and ๐๐ญ๐๐ฏ๐ had become tired of commuting to London to work and it was mutually agreed it was time to finally move the studio down to Brighton.
This was the end for ๐๐๐๐, and all further releases from '99 onwards were all produced down on the ๐๐๐ข๐กโ ๐ถ๐๐๐ ๐ก ๐๐ ๐ธ๐๐๐๐๐๐.
This mix is a tribute to the ๐๐๐๐ years selecting tracks close to ๐๐๐ข๐ง's heart, produced from 1993-1999 from all three bands.
The mix starts with '๐น๐๐๐', the first ever Goa track that ๐๐๐ข๐ง produced with ๐๐๐ฌ๐จ๐ง at Dragonfly in the winter of '93, which was never released and as mentioned earlier there are a number of ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ tracks included in the mix that never saw the light of day, in amongst those, ๐๐๐ข๐ง has raided his DAT collection and unearthed early ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ mixes of '๐ญ๐๐๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐', and '๐บ๐๐๐๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐ป๐๐๐๐๐' to come.
Also included is the first ever ๐๐๐๐๐๐ track written with ๐๐๐ง ๐๐จ๐๐, and an early DAT mix of ๐๐๐๐๐๐โ โ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐โ.
Forward to 2016 and ๐๐๐ข๐ง dusted off all the original ๐๐๐๐ equipment, an old ๐ด๐ก๐๐๐ 1040๐ ๐ก, the first ๐๐๐๐ ๐ด๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ and dug out all of the old floppy disks and samples and sysex dumps of the synths used on the original recordings and embarked on rerecording five classic tracks from each band with a view after fifteen years, to get back out and play live, playing these re-imagined tunes, re-done with a modern twist, playing gigs in ๐ด๐๐๐๐๐๐, ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐, ๐ต๐๐๐๐๐ข๐, ๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐, ๐๐๐๐๐๐ and ๐ผ๐ ๐๐๐๐...
Three of these new mixes are also included in the mix - the ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ tracks - '๐ด๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐', '๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ต๐๐๐๐ป๐๐', and a re-working of '๐จ๐๐๐๐๐๐', which is a fusion of re-written parts from the original ๐๐๐๐ก๐๐ ๐น๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฃ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ and the ๐ถ๐ฆ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ธ23 ๐ด๐๐๐ข๐ ๐ฃ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐.
So there you have it, a bit of history and tribute to the crazy years that were ๐๐๐๐, we hope you enjoy.....
