ANOEBIS, SUOMI/PSYCHEDELIC TRANCE SET

𝐆𝐀𝐃 is 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐤𝐚𝐥𝐚 (aka 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢 𝐁𝐚𝐛𝐚) and 𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨 (aka 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐳𝐦𝐨) from 𝐻𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑘𝑖/𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑, who had their studio at 𝐴𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑘𝑎𝑡𝑢 3 in 𝑇𝑜̈𝑜̈𝑙𝑜̈. 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞 is a DJ, musician and party organizer, and was involved in the Finnish Goa Trance forest and free-party scene from early on through the '90s. 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞 frequently visited London, Berlin, Stockholm and Copenhagen in search of new EDM sounds, even up to two times per month. He started going to Goa in the winters and then to Britain and Central Europe in the summers, starting to collect and trade Goa-music in the 90's, first on C-cassettes, then on DAT-tapes.

𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐤𝐚𝐥𝐚 copied and played tracks from friends and other travellers. He especially mentions Japan and California as a source for early “special” material. Later, the focus of his inspiration started to shift to Australia, to where also 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞 considered there was a special bond of kindred spirits from Finland like many other Finnish sources did. For his gigs as a DJ, he often favored French and Italian material, which he thought was good for the masses and easier to dance to. He was less interested in German, British and Israeli: “mainstream underground” sounds.

𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐤𝐚𝐥𝐚 and 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨 started producing music in 1992. They based their music on existing EDM, being fans of that kind of sound in general. It took 3 to 4 years for their productions to mature to the level of commercial recordings. At first, they spent a considerable amount of time just trying out different things on synthesizers and samplers, with an 𝐴𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝐼𝐼 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑜𝑐ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑟 as their sequencer. Before releasing anything though, they had already moved to a 𝐿𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑐 𝐴𝑢𝑑𝑖𝑜 running on 𝑀𝑎𝑐𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑜𝑠ℎ-𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑠𝑒𝑡𝑢𝑝. Tracker-based music on Amiga and Atari was not their thing, but rather something for the younger generation in 𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐤𝐚𝐥𝐚's opinion.

The duo started performing their first live gigs, and also had publishing agreement with the 𝑊𝑎𝑟𝑛𝑒𝑟-𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑒𝑙𝑙 recording company's German division, but no recording would ever be published from it. The company was not interested in publishing the kind of sound 𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐤𝐚𝐥𝐚 and 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨 were creating, but rather were actively trying to encourage them to change their style into something more marketable by them, namely house-music.

𝐆𝐀𝐃's first album '𝐀𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨 𝟑𝐃' was released by the newly-formed Finnish 𝐸𝑥𝑜𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑖𝑐 𝑅𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑠 in very late 1996, just two weeks after the 𝐹𝑙𝑖𝑝𝑝𝑖𝑛' 𝐵𝑖𝑥𝑖𝑒𝑠 album '𝑆𝑜̈𝑟𝑘𝑎̈ 𝑆𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑐' had come out. According to 𝑃𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑖 𝐾𝑜𝑠𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑛, the album's name has a special etymology, which is that 𝐴𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑘𝑎𝑡𝑢 3 𝐷 had been the address of the recently deceased Finnish musician 𝑃𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑖 𝑊𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑖's office, upstairs from their studio. 𝑃𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑖 𝑊𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑖 had gone to Goa and was a known follower of 𝐼𝑜𝑟 𝐵𝑜𝑐𝑘'𝑠 𝑆𝑎𝑔𝑎, and had gotten to know 𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨 well after returning to Finland in 1995, before his death. The album title was a sort of secret homage to his personality and career in music. After the album release, some European promotion companies got interested in the duo, and they started playing on festivals in 𝐶𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑙 𝐸𝑢𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑒. 𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐤𝐚𝐥𝐚 considers the album release to be a watershed-event in the landscape of Finnish EDM, as it opened the road for live trance music also in Finland. He stated that it changed the scene and live-gigs of trance would start get arranged frequently after their break.

On 𝐆𝐀𝐃's tour of 𝐶𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝐸𝑢𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑒, and 𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐤𝐚𝐥𝐚 considers their best gig ever be the one that they played at “𝐴𝑙𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑠𝑐ℎ𝑒 𝐾𝑜𝑛𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑠” in 𝐺𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑦, which was a midsummer party of 2000-3000 people. They played the Sunday morning 6 am -set there, right after 𝑇𝑠𝑢𝑦𝑜𝑠ℎ𝑖 𝑆𝑢𝑧𝑢𝑘𝑖, who was the most famous DJ in Goa and Psychedelic Trance at the time. This time-slot is one of the best times to play, and as it was after the biggest name in the scene it can be both rewarding and difficult, and they enjoyed it like no other.

After the Central European tour, the duo had had enough and effectively stopped producing any more music. A second album was never released, although some of their later tracks were still featured on 𝐵𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑅𝑜𝑜𝑚 and 𝐸𝑥𝑜𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑖𝑐 𝑅𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑠 compilations.

It was just a few months ago (on October 2021) when 𝑆𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑝 𝑅𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑠' sub-label 𝐶𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑐 𝐺𝑜𝑎 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑥 released 𝐆𝐀𝐃's album '𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐭 & 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝' with 12 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑜𝑢𝑠𝑙𝑦 𝑢𝑛𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑑 total experimental, out of the box suomi influenced, old school trance tracks by the two Finnish pioneers.

𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐤𝐤𝐚𝐥𝐚 was also one of the earliest participants in the Finnish EDM label 𝐸𝑥𝑜𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑖𝑐 𝑅𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑠, and a central member of 𝑃𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝑅𝑌 which had a strong presence in Punavuori and the Helsinki EDM scene. His influence on the DJ-circuit, the DAT trading scene and party organizing as well as a scene-activist in Helsinki is of considerable importance.

𝐌𝐢𝐤 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨 was also member of the hard rock band 𝐸𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜𝑛 𝐻𝑖𝑔ℎ, playing drums and percussion. He also collaborated with the German musician 𝑀𝑖𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑒𝑙 𝐾𝑜ℎ𝑙𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑟 under the alias 𝐴𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑜 3𝐷 for only one track titled '𝑁𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑒 𝑆𝑜𝑛𝑔' in 1997, which was released on 𝐵𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑅𝑜𝑜𝑚 𝐴𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑠 compilation '𝑀𝑎𝑑𝑒 𝑂𝑛 𝐸𝑎𝑟𝑡ℎ'.

𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐄𝐁𝐈𝐒 is a Goa Trance addicted international DJ, playing this kind of music as much as possible for people that love to dance hard and float around on old school classic & modern Goa Trance! He also plays ambient once in a while and melodic forest trance under his alter ego 𝑆𝑘𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑡𝑜𝑛 𝐻𝑒𝑥. Lately he also started to play more and more ecstatic dance sets.

The story of 𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐄𝐁𝐈𝐒 starts in 1998. In that year he discovered Goa Trance. Immediately he was so convinced of that music that he bought all the CDs he could buy! Pretty soon he had 200 CDs which resulted in a first DJ-set during new year 2000.

Around that period he didn’t dj alone. Mostly he played together with a friend called 𝐷𝑎𝑣𝑒 (aka 𝐷𝐽 𝑃𝑎𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑘𝑎) and together they were called 𝑃𝑎𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑘𝑎𝑛𝑜𝑒𝑏𝑖𝑆. Because 𝐷𝑎𝑣𝑒 was too busy with his studies 𝐉𝐨𝐬𝐤𝐞 started to play alone since 2001 and before he realized he was playing more or less every weekend.

The first years of the new millennium were hard. Around that period he was one of the last DJs playing “melodic Goa Trance”, the old school style. Because he loved that style so much and it seemed more or less dead, he and a good friend (𝐹𝑎𝑏𝑖𝑒𝑛 '𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑠' 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑠𝑎𝑢𝑑, one of the founders of the 𝑃𝑠𝑦𝑛𝑒𝑤𝑠.𝑜𝑟𝑔 website ) decided to start their own music label called 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬. The label was set up in the summer of 2004 (𝐽𝑜𝑠𝑘𝑒 and 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑠 met for the first time in 2000, for a party gathering members of 𝑃𝑠𝑦𝑛𝑒𝑤𝑠.𝑜𝑟𝑔, then met regularly, sharing the same love for melodic Goa Trance). Not much later melodic Goa Trance started to revive in Belgium and some other countries in the world, and this resulted in many parties with only “old /newschool Goa Trance”.

Since 2010 𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐄𝐁𝐈𝐒' career exploded more internationally. He played in 𝐼𝑠𝑟𝑎𝑒𝑙, 𝐽𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑛, 𝐵𝑟𝑎𝑠𝑖𝑙 and more or less 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑦 𝑖𝑛 𝐸𝑢𝑟𝑜𝑝.! Also, he played on many big festivals such as: 𝐵𝑜𝑜𝑚 𝐹𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑙, 𝑃𝑠𝑦 𝐹𝑖, 𝐿𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝐹𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑙, 𝑍𝑁𝐴 𝐺𝑎𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝑈𝑛𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑜 𝑃𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑜, 𝑆𝑈𝑁 𝐹𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑙, 𝐴𝑝𝑠𝑎𝑟𝑎, 𝑆𝑎𝑚𝑠𝑎𝑟𝑎, 𝑆𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑆𝑎𝑓𝑎𝑟𝑖, 𝐹𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑜𝑚 𝐹𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑙, and more.

Since 2019 𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐄𝐁𝐈𝐒 with 𝐶ℎ𝑟𝑖𝑠 𝑅𝑜𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑡 run Suntrip's sub-label 𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒄 𝑮𝒐𝒂 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒙 focusing on digital only re-releases of classic Goa Trance albums/tracks and releases of previously unreleased tracks from the past.

And the connection between 𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐄𝐁𝐈𝐒 and 𝑆𝑢𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑠𝑎𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑖/𝑆𝑝𝑢𝑔𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑐 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒? Let's go back into history...

Between 2001-2005 when Goa Trance was almost dead, 𝑆𝑢𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑠𝑎𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑖 was the most creative and melodic electronic music out there, so 𝐉𝐨𝐬 fell in love with it! The best festival he did in those years was 𝐸𝑙𝑖𝑥𝑖𝑟𝑖𝑎 2004 festival in Finland: every suomi artist thinkable somewhere deep in a forest! After that 𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐄𝐁𝐈𝐒 played suomi-sets (next to Goa Trance) on many occasions. In 𝐵𝑒𝑙𝑔𝑖𝑢𝑚 they had organizations like 𝐿𝑃𝑆, but also 𝐿𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑜𝑟𝑦, 𝑆𝑢𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑜𝑢𝑠 and other parties focusing on this music. 𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐄𝐁𝐈𝐒 played on many of them and unfortunately around 2013 the parties, and most of the releases, stopped. It seemed Suomi died a bit like Goa Trance did around 2001. But when something is almost dead, it can revive and lately it seems like people discover this music again! 𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐄𝐁𝐈𝐒 never sells CDs or music, he still has his 𝑆𝑢𝑜𝑚𝑖/𝑆𝑝𝑢𝑔𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑐 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 collection of back in the days and he continues to add more recent releases.
